I'm overhauling a AC DD w/ a 6 cylinder diesel engine. New sleeves, pistons, rings, main & rod bearings. One side of the engine is stamped with the numbers 1 thru 6. The rods are stamped 1 thru 6 and the rod caps are stamped 1 thru 6. The new pistons do not have markings in relation to the block. Which way do the pistons and the rods face in the block or does it matter?

Thanks

If you're going back with the old rods, put them back the same way they came out. With the new pistons, it doesn't matter which way they go; they have never been in those holes, so they don't know any better. Good luck!

The engine was already disassembled so I don't know which way the rods were intstalled.

Thanks

If the numbers coincide between the rods and rod caps, then I would probably put the numbered side of the rod to the numbered side of the block. I just did a rebuild last year on my HD3 Allis highlift, but I can't remember 100% how mine was. I know the block and rods were numbered, so I'm certain that I lined all the numbers together. I've run a few D graders (all gassers), I always really liked them. I hope you get it going soon, and enjoy it. Good luck, and keep us posted!
