I need to replace the ignition switch on a 1943 GM 371 (Diesel) starter. The starter is electrically operated, in other words, it does not use the manual plunge pedal starter.

What kind of push button switch would I need to buy? Any special voltage or amperage requirements?

Any idea where this could be purchased? Can it also be converted to a keyed ignition?

Dave,
The current draw is pretty high on those starter solenoids. So I add a Ford type remote solenoid to switch the current to the starter and control the remote solenoid with a dash push button or keyed switch with start position. Any parts store should be able to help you with these parts.

I suppose this could be a trick question. Diesels don't have ignition switches. But you could find a starter switch from any other tractor or garden tractor that will fit the space you have. If it's from a gas tractor, you just don't use the coil wire connection. I've been having trouble with dimestore ignition switches lately. Seems like they don't connect in cold weather. Works good if I use the heat gun to warm it up.
