d17 valve seals

I have a d17 that has had symptoms of bad valve seals,smoking when first starts,smoking when opened up,oil cunsumption.Just took the head off and it has no seals.It has a splash pan over the rocker which my manual says is to keep oil off valve stems.Have my seals completely deteriated or were there none to start with.Your help is appreciated. Waynesville

I am pretty sure you can install Ford "umbrella seals"...you probably only need them on the intakes anyway....the exhaust valves don't allow much oil flow anyway....no vacuum on them..

Now that's got me thinking.I don't think that there are any seals to start with but I ain't sure.Surely someone has worked on one that has a good memory.Help us out.

Ok..I am sure there were never any on the WD-45.

The D-17 is the same engine...

I used Ford Umbrella type valve seals on mine..real cheap and will work fine..be sure to re-install the round "circlip" valve keepers when you put the valves back in..if you remove the valves, which is not necessary.. They prevent a "dropped valve"...
