I am going to an auction to look at a 1963 D17. Can anybody tell me when the transition from Series III to Series IV occurred and what the major differences are? Thanks

According to Terry Deans book the series IV started in 1964 at serial 75001. If it is a 1963 it must be a series III according to this book. Hope this helps Mike

I have a 1963 which is a series III. I think series IV came out in 1964. Maybe late 63. Best to look for the hydraulic pump-if located on right where belt pulley was on earlier 17's, then it is series IV. Series IV's could have a big heavy factory 3-pt OR a snap coupler. Series IV's also had side console hydraulic levers on the right. Also the high volume, low pressure hydraulics(industry standard).

according to Terry Dean's book...
SerIV came out in 1964 beginning at s/n 75001.
There were 14,213 made ending in 1967

The single biggest difference is the hydraulics.They went to a pump mounted where the belt pulley used to be and went to normal hydraulic pressures and volumes like everyone else had.Hope I could help. If you have any other questions e-mail me at [email protected] or call me.

The Series IV could be equipped with industry standard Cat-2 3pt lift OR the earlier SnapCoupler system. (I don't know if the SerIII had this option.) It the one at the auction is a 3pt , it will probably bring good money but would be worth it.
