I have a 1954 WD-45 and the third gear kicks out and will not stay. I have split the tractor and have examined the coupling collar for 3rd and 4th gears. The collar is visably damaged, my question is, the 3rd gear shows wear and damage to noise where the coupler engages but the side contact points appear to be fair. Will just a new coupling collar solve my problem? Or should I dissassemble all the way and replace coupling collar and 3rd gear?
Would appreciate any input.

I had this problem. you will probably have to replace the gear & maybe more. the gear nubs inside are worn due to grinding them. the corners are probably rounded and this causes them to kick out . look for after market gears. AC gears are too exp. you can email me and i will tell you who to contact.

Hi
The leading edge is the very important to keeping the tractor in gear if it's wore it will try and force the collar to pop out. Another thing you might want to check is the shifting fork , sometimes they wear enough to cause this problem to start sooner. If the fork is excessively wore replacing it might buy you some time.If you have any questions e-mail me at [email protected] or call me.
Thanks
:) Jerry
