I believe my AC B is a 1939 model. It has been great for the last 15 years of mowing. Last year it started to develop a knocking noise. After a few discussions I have been convinced it may be a main bearing going or gone bad. I am about ready to drop the pan and inspect the bearings. Any other suggestions on the knocking noise?

You might be correct but most of the time when these little engines start to knock it will be a rod bearing.

Thanks, I ment the rod bearing not main. Do you know if it can be inspected by dropping the pan

Yes you can. You will have to loosen up the front axle plate on the front of the engine to let front of pan down. Not a bunch, I think you need only a 1/4" or maybe a little more. The big nut under the bellhousing will need to be loosened the same amount to allow the plate to move. I put a jack under the bellhousing and lift just enough to slide/pry it forward.

Steve, does the 'knock' kind of go away, when you speed it up? You might check the front pulley, they sometimes will get loose, causes a 'knock' when it idles but goes away when you speed it up. You might check that first, lots easier to fix and cheaper!! Brad Sw Ia.
