I have my 170 apart except the counter shaft wont drive forward. Also I notice several places sell the 1st and 2nd and 2nd gears for the main shaft but I also need 2nd for the countershaft (assuming I ever get it out). Is there any place to get the O- rings ,snap rings and plug?

Rodger,
Just re-read IT's manual on D17 xmsn (same as 170)procedures and as you say, the shaft should come forward.
They mentioned using a threaded adapter and slide hammer or a brass drift from the opposite end.
One thing that could be hanging it up is that there may be a substantial burr from where the snap ring/bearing was pushing against it.
When I was into mine, there was a LOT of play front to rear on this shaft and I needed to make a special shim. The book(s) say to assemble with existing snap rings and note amount of play, then buy appropriate snap ring to fit the forward groove as they are made in different thicknesses.

Don't know about the 2nd gear but AGCO has the other stuff and you'll need the large gasket between torque tube and xmsn anyways, so might as well buy all misc parts there.

Thanks a lot Gatz I'll let you know how it goes. Is it necessary to replace o rings on bearing carriers for final drives?

Rodger,
I'd replace everything I could while you've got it apart. (Peace of mind factor)

Also, it gives u a chance to look at the bushings within to see what kinda shape they're in.
Note that these bushings are not subject to much side load; they just keep the axle shaft aligned with the spider gears, which should be a balanced load.

Be careful when assembling...it's a close fit.

Depending on the hours of the 170, you may notice a small ring on the axle where the seal was. Now's the time to take some emery cloth and polish up that area.

The o'rings in the bearing carriers are a standard size (as are some of the other parts discussed)
If you have a "bearing house" near, I'd go there 1st and get what's available. Then visit AGCO for the parts that are unique to the tractor.

Do you have a shop manual ? If not, I'd highly recommend getting one because it outlines the procedures very well and gives dimensions and tolerances for assembly. Gatz
