My neighbors B Model fouls new plugs with dry black soot. Carb. was rebult with new kit installed. Choke is open and air cleaner is unrestricted. While running it smokes black and looses power when under load. Ignition appears normal with all plugs firing. Compression is good on all 4 cyl. Can the Zenith carb on a B be adjusted for air/fuel mixture? What else could cause it to run rich?

With regard to Brian's comment on carburator adjustments, This particaular B has a carburator with only a single adjustment screw, facing towards tractor front, and located up high near the throttle plate area. In our attempts to correct the smoking/ power problem, adjustment of this screw did nothing at all. Could this be a non-original carburator?

P.Wimmer: The carburetor that you have is correct. The main power jet on the carburetor is fixed and non-adjustable. The problem of running rich is caused by the main power jet having too large of a hole in it for your application. I just had the same problem with a remanufatured IH carburetor for a Cub from Central Tractor. After installing the carburetor, the tractor would run rich. I removed the power jet and compared the hole size with the power jet out of another cub carburetor that was running correctly and found that the hole was almost twice the size of the proper jet. I could not purchase a new jet from Case-IH, so I had the local machine shop make a jet for me. I would check your local AGCO dealer first to see if a replacement jet is available. I hope that this helps. Gordon

In answer to your question, yes they can be adjusted. Start with a clean set of plugs, and on the side of the carb facing the front of the tractor there will be two needles to adjust the mixture. Start with the one on the bowl of the carb. You will have the throttle set at full speed. Turn the needle in untill the engine smoothes out. Then set the throttle to idle and turn the needle in or out to get the best idle. When you're done, better change the oil and filter as running rich will get fuel in the oil. Hope this helps. Brian
