Alternator for AC Model B

I bought an 1941 AC Model B with a generator that is unhooked likely because of the different battery. It has been converted to a 12 Volt Battery (with positive grounding.

My nephew has a 12 one wire Alternator (with automatic power output when needed) and has hooked up such to just charge the battery on other things.

Since the battery is positive ground, and the alternator is likely to have a negative grounde ground, will this work? If so, which post should the charging wire be connected to?

I put on a single wire alternator on my B years ago. Could never get it to spin fast enough to charge battery even with a smaller pully. Went back to conventional alternator.

Hi, It will work, but you will have to change to neg. grd on your battery and your coil ( meaning you put neg. terminal on coil goes to dist.)And switch terminals on your amp meter. A true one wire altenator has no exciter wire it only has a load terminal. It would be best to use the smallest pulley on the alt. that you can get your hands on because of the speed thing.If you have any more questions please feel free to e-mail me at [email protected] or give me a call. Also, don't worry about the starter motor. It spins the same way not matter which way it is hooked up. Positive or Negative ground matters not to the starter motor.

I just did the same thing on my 45. I changed the battery to - ground and ran the feed from the atl. to the +. I changed the wires around on the coil so the + was fed from the + side of battery not through ground.

Another thing I ran into was the tractor wouldn't spin the 1 wire alt. fast enough so I had to put on an exciter wire. Depending on how you plumb the wire you could get backfeed to the ignition and may need to install a switch or 1 way diode on the excitor wire.

If the tractor is + ground no it will not work unless you change it over to - ground
