I am looking at purchasing a tractor. I had been told that he thought it was a 1948 WD45. It turns out that it is a 1951 WD model. Where can I gather information on this model. It is worth purchasing for around $800 in un-restored working condition. It needs Tires and a buch of TLC.

Joe

I used the model S-50 from Force America. 1 in and 2 out ports. Works great for loader & backblade operation. 800-328-2732.

Purchased a good running WD, fairly recent overhaul, good tires, decent sheet metal, working hydraulics, for $800.00 two years ago. About average price in mid Missouri. However, that is about 1/2 the price of other tractor makes, same size, in similiar condition.

Parts are easy to come by. Tires and rims are high priced. Engine work can set you back a good chunk of money (more than the price of a decent running tractor). If the tractor is not running. It's not worth very much.

Any one of a dozen or more Allis books will give you information on this tractor, they are one of the highest production tractors Allis Chalmers made. Check at your local library or farm store for books.

In my area $800. is no steal for a running WD. You can buy them all day long for that money. The tractor has to have a good transmission for that money. It has to be running pretty good too. New tires are going to cost you around $400 if you have to go that route. What condition is the sheet metal in? Are the fenders and hood and stuff all bent up and rusty? Does the tractor have a snap coupler hitch and lift latches? Some of the tractors originally came with a pin hitch, which isn't nearly as nice as the snap coupler. Lots would have been converted by now. The lift latches sell for $50 to $100 if you have to buy them, and I don't know what a snap coupler bell will cost you. Does the tractor come with a 3 point conversion? That will cost you $200 to $300 if you have to go buy one. Is it wide front or narrow? There are a lot more narrow fronts, but the wide fronts seem to be more popular now and worth more money. Is the front end tight or is there a lot of play in the steering? These tractors have seen a lot of use and there can be a lot of wear. How are the rear wheel rims, are they rusty and rotted? Tire fluid rots the rims baddly if it has leaked on them. You can buy new rims, but they are not cheap. Some Gleaner combine tires and rims will fit the tractor I think and sometimes they can be found pretty cheap.

If the tractor check out OK and you don't have to do too much to it then $800 isn't the worst deal you'll ever make, but if you have to put $600 dollars or more into the tractor to get it the way you want it, you'll almost never be able to get that money back if you sell it.

The WD's all had dual foot brakes which were an improvement over the WC's hand brakes. The WD's have independent PTO and hydraulics through the hand clutch. You can stop forward movement of the tractor while still running the PTO and hydraulics by using the hand clutch. The foot clutch stops tractor movement as well as PTO and hydraulics. The hydraulic pump on these AC tractors is high pressure and low volume. It will run most of the modern hydraulic cylinders if you are careful but it can blow some of them if you are not careful. The hydraulic system is one way. In other words you have power to push a hydraulic cylinder open but no power to close it. For that it uses the weight of the implement.
