What can you guys tell me about this model? What are some things to look out for when doing a Pre-Purchase Inspection? Are parts readily available? What is the reliability of this tractor? Can you give me some specs and options that were available? Is there a site dedicated to this particular model?

Joe

Did they build WD45's in 1948?? I may be wrong but the WD45 was introduced around 1954.

WD45 was introduced in 1953 as other posters have previously mentioned. As nearly all parts are interchangable, many WDs have by now been fully or partially updated to WD45 specs. Many more have been given the cosmetic only update, i.e., WD45 decals.

I will investigate it further this evening. I am not the owner but a perspective buyer. The price seems good but I havent seen the tractor yet in person and I am not all that sure that the owner told me correctly as he was going by memory. He did state that the tractor has independant rear wheel braking (I have no clue if that helps out at all) and that the tractor runs but is in un-restored condition.

PS. Is there any way to NOT have to re-enter my name and email every time I post?

Wayne is right, you can"t have a "48 WD45. Check the serial number on the tractor and then compare it to the serial number guide on here. The newer WD45 is an improvement over the earlier WD. I has a bit more horse power and better gears. Most parts are interchangable so by now a WD could easily have a WD45 engine, transmission or anything else. Of course a WD45 could have those parts from a WD by now. A WD engine has removable plates on the side of the block behind the carb, a WD45 block is solid and does not have these plates. The original gear shifter on very late WD"s and all WD45 was curved while the shifter on most WD"s was straight, of course this could have been changed by now on any tractor. Regardless of what the tractor turns out to be, one of the most serious things to check, is if the transmission wants to jump out of gear. Take the tractor to a hill, (check brakes before doing this) drive the tractor down the hill in each gear with the throttle pretty well open. While going down hill close the throttle quickly. If tractor stays in gear, good. If tractor jumps out of gear, bad. Can cost many dollars to fix transmission that jumps out of gear, and it can get so bad that it happens not just on hills, but most anytime. These can be great tractors for the money if they don"t have major problems.

If the year is correct, it is a wd. The wd45 was not produced until 1953. They are equally good tractors. The wd45 basically a wd with improvements. Parts easily available for either. Hope this helps.Wayne

I have done investigative work and have some serial numbers/Model numbers (?) from the rear axle. Where can I look up where the numbers mean?

I think I have figured it out! From the Serial Number it looks like its a 1951 WD! Did the WD's come in One Size only? This thing looks kind of HUGE! I guess it is hard to tell the sizes of these things in photos when there is nothing to relate it to.

Can you guys give me the skinny on this tractor? I would like to gather up as much information as I can on them.

Thanks,

Joe
