I'm new to A-C. Mostly have Fergusons. Got a manual for my CA. It says use non foaming 20 wt. or 10 wt. oil in tranny/diff/pto, depending on outside temperatures. I'm not sure what is in there now, so I'm thinking to replace it to be sure. What I assume the manual means, in today's vernacular, is 20 wt. (or 10 wt.) non detergent motor oil. Is that correct? Or should I be using hydraulic fluid, like the 134 that some of the old Fords use? Or something else? Thanks for replies.

have been using "tractor lube" in a C for years now. Doesn't get a lot of use, but has been working well. Tractor lube is a general prupose oil for most things on a tractor except the engine.

I understand that to be correct, and that is what I use in my WD hydraulics. Some say you can use todays hydraulic fluid and some insist it is better. I have no reason to argue that point but my thought is I am using what Allis Chalmeres recomenned for my tractor and it has done well for going on fifty years so I am staying with the Non detergent in mine.

Darn good question maybe all the old allis guys out there will give there 2 cents worth Ive never been sure just what to put in the allis CA I just recently purchased Dick and steve might know for sure. Maybe we can get alot of good input from these fellas

the tractors should now use 20wt hy-trans or a universla hydraulic transmission fluid. you can get at wal mart or farm store. this oil is non foaming, anti- water, etc. many better addatives than regular motor oil. cost about the same as motor oil.--- to answer your question , will motor oil work? yes, thats all they had 50 years ago, hy-trans is better, but motor oil wil work as long as you dont work hydraulics too hard and get it to foam up.

Thanks to all! Steve, do you know if motor oil will mix ok with the hy-trans. What's in there now doesn't smell like motor oil, has a little sulfur smell, and seems light, like maybe 20 wt, so i'm assuming it may be hy-trans.

How are the reduction gears at the rear wheels oiled? Are they separate using 90W gear oil or are they somehow connected to the tranny.

I'm asking this for a neighbor who just got a CA.

Herb, my CA manual says to use the same 20W non-detergent oil in the final drives that is used in the trans/hydraulic/diff. You should find a little plug on the inside of the final drive housing just under the axle housing. Fill the drive up to this plug.

first of all it is not a good idea to mix oils. the transmission of a CA is not that sophisticated, but still not a good idea. hydraulic oil normally does not smell like sulfer, but an old gear lube might seem that way. trans only holds $12. worth of oil, i would change all.----- there are three 1/2 inch pipe plugs under the trans, bevel and pto boxes. drain all three and fill thru one 1 inch plug by your left foot.---- lastly, the final drives are two sheetmetal pans under the reduction gear, set insdie the rear wheel rims. you need to take the pan off, clean and reinstall. refill thru the 1/2 inch plug. use 90 wt gear lube for the final drives, and yes-- the CA manual is a miss print. should be 90 wt like the B and C tractors.
