I've never owned or drove a tractor. I have aquired an interest after watching RFD/TV. There's some beauties on that show. I have a fishcamp in the woods and soon to be retired. I've restored a few antique clocks and thought I might enjoy restoration of an old tractor. I'm courious is there a certain time to buy or just when the best deal comes along ? Living in La. I often come across tractors at auctions but not the real old ones. A lot of 8N and 9N's. What's your advise?

I would start by buying some of Roger Welch's books, like "Old tractors and the men who loves them" they are very funny along with being informative. I have really use a lot of the tips he lists in his books. Then I would look to find a running tractor to restore, before starting with one that is stuck and missing loads of pieces. GOOD LUCK

To be honest, On my way to my fishcamp there is an abandoned camp several hundred yards from mine. Sitting in front is a WD45 Allis Chalmers Road Grader. It's 98% complete. I could give you a complete evaluation of this machine down to the hand tools found to be in the tool box mounted next to the seat. My problem is the owner wont't respond to my request. She's very old and living with a sister in Arkansas. They pay the property lease fees but since the husband died no one has visited this camp for years. The old tractor sits in yard just rottening along with everything else. Several barns surround this, I wonder what's in them.
I'll just keep trying. I have pictures if that helps on Yesterday's tractors-antique tractor

Where abouts is your fish camp. I have one on the West Fork River north of LC, and another on Bayou Benoit in the Basin. I live in Lafayette and have a Ford 641 and a 5000.

Dave, I'm sure you'll enjoy working on tractors.
There seems to be a good balance between critical or high tolerance parts and just plain "this goes here" parts on a tractor.
Expect to expand your inventory of tools. (lol)
As far as the best time, it's when you feel like you've found a good deal.
It might be a good idea to talk to some locals or acquaintences down there who might have done a restoration to see what's all involved.
I'd ask them to let you drive one (or more) around too, and get a feel for what an old non-power assisted steering tractor is like.
The restoration can be as much as you want, or just clean up and paint; depending on the tractor.
There's a lot of websites for the different brands of tractors, too....just start searching for the kind that interests you the most.

Remember that the rarer a tractor is, the more scarce the parts.
