Hit the starter on my trusty ole 17 the other day (start this one nearly every day in winter to feed round bales) & the starter just whizzes or sings. Must not be engaging into flywheel. Tried the tapping on the outside of case, still no release. Looks like have to remove the starter. How did they squeeze it in there between frame & block? Looks like wrench time!

Sounds like the starter drive, or "Bendix", went out. Try asking for one at the auto parts store and the kid behind the counter will probably just look at you funny. 'Fraid it's time for a new starter. I don't remember if there are two or three bolts holding it on, but it's not a bad job. Just be sure to disconnect the battery(!!!!! !) first and maybe try to clean off enough of the accumulated goo so that you can see the bolt heads. Have fun.

Thanks Wilko. Bad bendix it was. Took starter off, took it to are local expensive but good starter alternator repair shop for an overhaul. Hope it lasts 41 years like the original. That'l make me 102 and about ready to retire.

Glad to hear it worked out without big headaches. By the way, things must be pretty prosperous around your neighborhood if you get to retire at 102. I'm hoping to kick back by 108, but that's just if everything goes right.
