I have converted my WD45 over to 12v with a generator. I bought a 12v generator that was off of a D17. This mounted right up to the WD45. The only things I had to do was take my pulley from the original generator (double pulley) and add a voltage regulator (bought at TSC). I wired it just like my D17 and mounted the voltage regulator on the front side of the battery box.

Don't forget to change your light bulbs after you are done.

Put a smaller diameter pulley on the 6 volt generator to turn it 50 or 60% faster, then hook it to a 12 volt regulator. You're done.

you can get a voltage regulator off a 1959 chevy truck (at Auto Zone or NAPA). they also have the gnerator, but i agree, you can use the 6 volt generator to get 12 volts, if you demand a low current to charge the battery only and dont have several lights or other load installed.

The 6 volt generator running faster and making 12 volts has the same CURRENT capability as it had at 6 volts. So if it did 30 amps at 6 volts it will do 30 amps at 12 volts. The current capability depends only on the wire diamter in the armature. If you rewind it for 12 volts you will end with twice as many turns of wire with half the cross section and then you will cut the current capability in half. But just turning it faster doesn't change the current rating.

The field (and so the case) will run hotter with 12 volts applied to the field designed for 6 volts. It wouldn't be out of line to add an external series resistor or change the field windings for windings with more turns (and smaller wire), but I've run such a Delco generator as a motor at 24 volts with full 24 volts on the field without it overheating.
