Belt pulley question on WD-45

I was wondering if anyone has tried to put a V-belt pulley on the shaft for the flat-belt pulley on the side of the tractor... I want to make a bracket to hook a 10,000 watt generator directly to it with V-belts... The WD-45 has enough ponies that it wouldn"t need to run at PTO speed for rated power, so I thought I could just use a belt drive generator and size the pullies properly to get the gen. set to turn 3600 RPM while the tractor putters along at about 800 - 900 RPM.

I have one of those original AC drives with the single groove v-pulley, instead of the flat. I think it was used to drive the side mount mower on a WC. My Dad had a mounted picker on a WC, the one made before the '33' model. It's fans were driven with a v belt driven by the flat pulley. The flat pulley is not made thick enough for a machinist to cut a v groove in it. I've seen specs regarding speed, but it was in feet per minute, which would have to be recalculated into shaft speed, according to the outer diameter of the pulley. Might have been in the WC or WD operator manual. Otherwise, if you can determine OD of the driver and driven gears, shaft speed could be determined compared to engine speed, since the driver is on the main clutch shaft.

Found it- Dean's book on AC lists the RPM (not FPM) on a WD at 1260 rpm. Lists the D17 at 1384 rpm. Both had the 9 inch diameter pulleys, so you can compute fpm if you need that, but all you need is rpm and 9 inch size of the driver, and your gen pulley size to determine the gen shaft speed. WD and WD45 should be the same speed- most other AC tractors list only dia and width of the pulley, not rpm or fpm.

Further update, from the WD45 Operator and Repair Parts manual- RPM at 1400 engine speed is 1260. Pulley runs at 1530 rpm at 1700 engine speed. FPM at 1400 rpm is 2969. So the pulley rpm is slightly under engine rpm.

Greggie, I put you a picture of the "V" belt pulley I bought for my WC in the parts & pieces.
I bought the pulley and an extra drive on EBAY last year for $30. I'm going to run my pea sheller with this pulley, and keep the flat belt for my corn mill. I would think a good machine shop could turn you one with no problem

The old Allis mounted cornpickers [I think it was model 33?] used a V pulley to drive the blowers on the cornpicker. You removed the nut that held the flat pulley on and withdrew the flatpulley and replaced with the V pulley. If I remember correctly the pulley's mounted on a tapered schaft.

You may be able to drive v-belts using the regular flat pulley, if you have enough of them.

10 kW is about 13.3 HP, since you will have a considerable wrap on the larger (flat) pulley, it should drive fairly well.

I bought a D17 that had a factory 3 groove pulley on it..... kinda wish I wouldn't have sold it.
I'm sure you can modify a pulley to mount where the flat one goes. I haven't had one off the shaft, but I know you can separate them.

Thanks everyone for the input... Tramway Guy, that's an interesting idea... just using the flat pulley. If I had my preferences, I would use a poly-V belt(serpentine type) and that would make your thought work even better. I could probably even have a machine shop put the proper grooves in the flat pulley for the belt.


By the way, what is the rated speed of the engine and what speed do the PTO and flat pulley shafts turn?

There is precedent for the flat/v-belt drive. John Deere used this method to drive the hydraulic bale thrower from the flywheel on the 24T baler. It worked very well.
