I am redoing a 1957 D14 and have changed it over too 12 volt with a one wire alt and negative ground. I plan on putting all of the original gauges in it, but was wondering how to wire the ammeter in so it would work properly. I have a wiring diagram for it, but I am not using the original DC generator. I also plan on adding 2 lights on the back in addition to the 2 up on the front rad shell. For these I will use a realy with the switch on the ground side. Can anyone help me out here. I am unsure onhow to wire up the ammeter. Thanks in advance.

the amp meter dont know a generator from an alternator. it also dont know 6 volts from 12 volts. all it knows is current flow from one side to the other. if you change from + ground to - ground, all you do is change the wires on the amp meter to the other side.---- in short, the 1 wire alternator has its wire go the the ampmeter and the opposite side of the meter goes to the + terminal on the battery. if the amp meter runs backward after startup, then reverse the wires.---- also, feed the light switches with a wire from the alternator side of the ampmeter. then if the lights are on with the motor off, your amp meter will show discharge. if you connect the lights striaght from the battery or wrongs side of the amp meter, the meter will not show current flow with the motor off.

Thanks Steve. I will get it wired in. Glad to know someone out there has a full understanding of electrcity.
