I have a wd with a zenith carb. The tractor runs fine as long as the choke is mostly on. The carb is rebuilt. I have installed a new manifold, new spark plug wires, new filter and gasket in the fuel bowl. The gas is fresh. Is it just because the tractor is a cold runner? Thanks for any help.

These tractors have a lot of problems with dirt in the fuel tank. Old paint flakes, rust etc. The dirt will intermittently clog the hole in the tank and slow or stop the fuel flow. When you shut off they may drift away from the drain and you will see a good flow. It also sounds like you do not have your jets adjusted right. The idle jet effects the high speed and vs/vs. The overhaul kit (if you have it) gives the presets for the jets and mine ran fine with those settings. When I got in on the plow I had to adjust the load jet about 1/4 turn and all has been well.

As Tom mentioned, could be either problem. Closing the choke would cut the air through the carb to compensate for a intake vacuum leak, enrichening the mixture for the engine to run. If the carb idle circuit is plugged with rust and debris you would also need to compensate with the choke. A little spritz of carb cleaner around the intake might be in order to find a vacuum leak if you have a leak somewhere while the engine is running. While spraying around, if the engine idle goes up for a second, you found your leak...

I sprayed some carb cleaner around the manifold and nothing changed. Was wondering if the fuel line is not feeding the carb with enough fuel. I pulled the line off of the carb and it seems to be a good flow. Was wondering how fast the flow rate should be? The fuel bowl always shows full. Should there be an air gap in the fuel bowl? Thanks.

It should run with the choke off after 10-15 seconds. Maybe not with a load for another few minutes, but you shouldn't have to have the choke on all time. It sounds like a vacume leak. I know,I know, you just put a manifold on. But that is what it sounds like. Unless somewhere in the carburator something is plugged up or otherwise blocked.

Try this!!!!! With the tractor at idle, wet your finger tip and put it on the back side of the carb on the end of the trottle shaft, shove the choke off andif the tractor smooths out, your problem 9is the body of the carb where the throttle shaft goes thru it. I have the bushings to fix that problem at the price of 6.00 and a little work. Thnaks Keith
