Recently purchased a 57 WD45 from a fella in AR. Seems that after closer inspection the tractor is really an earkier WD with WD45 decals. While I'll give the seller the benefit of the doubt, there is an average lower price for a comparable WD versus a WD45. That's what we are trying to figure out now. I told the seller I'd put the question to the various AC forums and see what the response is. Any help would be appreciated.

Just something to think about I inherited a "WD45" however upon closer inspection it was a WD. Now upon removing ther head for amuch needed valve job it had crater top pistons and a WD45 head Hendrick Brothers told me that it was a special motor kit that was adapted to make the WD's have more Horsepower. The drawback was that they broke cranks when put under load. That being said back in the 60's people didn't have alot of money to buy tractors like farmer's do now so they had to do what they could to get more power and to make them last longer. maybe you have a suprise waiting inside for you as well you see the blocks are all the same the strok, pistons and the head are all that separate a WD and a WD 45. By the way I love my WD and am in the process of restoring it for the fourth of July parade.

Myself, I have seen little difference in actual working of either a WD or WD-45. We had both new and I still have one of each. Worked them side by side on the farm with the same plows etc and never could see enough differenc to make me care which I had. WD's are getting rarer now and the price difference is usually small. They are still a great working tractor as they have always been. Particularly with snap coupler implements. I also prefer narrow fronts as that is what I grew up with and find them more versitile for field work.

After you buy it whatever it is, look for a parts tractor too. You will need one. The WD's go for about $800 and the WD45's go for about
$1100, here in western , Pa. I have seen several on the photo ads during the last year in that price range too. Good luck.

This is my second post on this. Since my first post, I now wonder what you paid for the tractor. Depending on your area, you may have paid the appropriate price for a WD. If the seller didn't know what he had, he probably is happy no matter what it is. I hate to say it but I think the majority of the responsibility rests with the buyer. Tractors in this vintage are almost always sold "as is, where is".

In my experience a WD is worth less than a WD45 - primarily because the 45 has a larger 226 engine vs 201 and significantly more power. Primedia shows a mid range 51 WD at 1510 vs a 52 WD at 1750 and a 53 WD45 gas at 1840. Dean & Swenson's Tractor & Crawler Value Guide shows mid range WD narrow front at $1400 vs WD45 NF gas at $2000.

I would agree with the $200-500 range in personal experience. But you have to look it from what you intend to do - as a collectable they each have value and specifics such as configuration and serial number may be significant, but if you are pulling or using them every day, the 45 will be the better bet.

I have personally been burned twice on buying WD45's with swapped motors - one had a WD and other a WC motor - frankly I wrote them both off and have been a lot more picky about getting S/N of both Tractor and Engine before I commit.

Also as to seller's intent - I have personally seen several WD's - probably 4 that I recall with 45 decals all of which were old decals not put on by current seller. In one case the tractor S/N was ground off but it had straight WD shift and WD motor. I was told by a former AC dealer employee that unscrupulous used tractor dealers in the 50's and 60's remarked them - due to the more desirability of the 45 they could get more and most people didn't know how to distinguish them.

Heard that story about Farmall Ms, too in reply to ACEd, 12-18-2004 19:24:27
Around here, they used to put power kits in postwar Ms to make the engine Super, then put SM decals on. Tractor wasn"t really a Super M but the people who bought them didn"t know much about the differences other than a Super had more HP than a plain M. Every now and then one will show up around here in an auction, and a retired, 80-something mechanic from the defunct local IH dealer is always there pointing out S/N and M vs. Super M features to potential buyers so they don"t get burned, God bless him.

Look at it this way, there are vey few differences between both tractors. I have 2 of each and they are both valuable at this day. I found it vey difficult to find a WD than a WD45. If you really want to get a rare, find yourself a WD45 Diesel. Be realistic, although I use my tractors for minor work, most people use them for shows and parades, more as a hobby. any way you look at it you got yourself a good tractor. Most WD's in my area that are worth restoring bring more than a WD45.

Well here is my opinion. Well giving the seller the benifet of the doubt a deal is a deal. It seems to me a closer inspection before agreeing to pay his price would have revealed the same thing. If you bought it thinking it was a WD and a closer inspection after buying it revealed it to be a WD45 would you be asking for our input as to how much more you should pay the guy to make things right? If I look at something for sale and pay his price it is mine and the money is his. I would say you are pretty lucky to have the guy willing to give a little back as he seems to be.

You make good point. Buyer beware, huh? I guess I have to ask myself if I would have called him to tell hime he had sold me a more valuable tractor than he had advertised. Just have a hard time swallowing the fact that the tractor is not what it was advertised to be, and with the general concensus being the WD is less valuable than the WD45. I want to be fair for both of us, but there needs to be a lesson here for both of us, too, not just me.

It is a good idea to insist on the serial numbers of the tractor and engine on these, once in a while they don"t match up.
Does yours have the straight gearshift lever or curved? It is possible to retrofit almost anything into a WD to make it into a WD45.

Where I'm from, a good WD-45 will bring about $2000 and a good WD about $2000. Don't know what you paid but you could say a WD is worth about 25% less than a WD-45.

I don't get the numbers. Did you mean that a WD is $1500?

The wd engine has a steel plate bolted to the block on the right hand side. The wd45 engine is a solid cast block. Some of the later wd's came with a curved shifter, the same as the wd45's. The last year of the wd's several were produced as "transition wd's" meaning A/C had sold more wd's than the had wd parts to fill so they used the wd45 engine as well to complete the orders. The head on the 45's are larger, but a lot of wd's were retroed to increase the hp. Use the serial number, block numbers and rail numbers as your best bet. Any questions or help needed please feel free to e. I have restored and maintain the following: WD45 diesel, WD45 gas, WD45 lp conversion, WD45 cane version with multi or all fuel as some people called them. The WD45 cane hase 38" rear tires and are great pullers, but when combined with using LP they are tough at the pulls.
