Intake and Exhaust Manifold Studs on A/C G153 Gaso

I need advice on the re-assembly of an Allis Chalmers G153 gasoline engine I'm putting back into an old FP40 A/C forklift. The G153 engine was the same as the 4-cylinder Buda engine; A/C bought the design.

I had the head rebuilt by a machine shop. They did a very nice job. I'm ready to put on the (huge!) 1-piece intake/exhaust manifold, but I noticed that an earlier coolant leak had pretty much disintegrated the 7/16 NF threads on 3 of the studs. Nuts on those studs are now "press to fit". Further, several of the other studs on close inspection could stand replacement also.

I've made some measurements, and have 3 different plans. I was wondering if I could ask you all for criticism and recommendations?

Plan 1:
New studs are available at about $30/each. Ouch!

Plan 2: As it happens, a 7/16"x5"x14 Grade 8 capscrew bolt, with a lockwasher and 1/8" thick washer, is just shy of bottoming out in the head when fully torqued. Replace all 10 studs for about $27.

Plan 3:
Replace all 10 studs with 6" long Grade 8 NC capscrew bolts. Cut the caps off the bolts with a bandsaw, and cut 1" of 20 TPI threads on the end opposite the existing 14 TPI threads. Basically, make my own studs out of bolts. Still cheap, but a good bit more labor.

I'm very much obliged for your help.

Hi Dave I had the same problem with my WD not Grainger not Fastenall and not Lawson had them my local agco dealer wanted 23 dollars apiece for them. Now I am fortunate to have the only "real" Allis Chalmers dealer in Missouri here in town they don't have the Agco dealership but are left over form the good ole days and have a trmendous amount of parts left over I bought the studs with an allis parts number for 5.17 I would also check out old garage's and repair shops these were common use on older stuff and alot of these guys stocked them

I ran into the same problem as yours, with a WC I rebuilt last spring. Nowere could I find replacements. Except for the NAPA store. They did not stock them though and said sorry. But as I turned to go I noticed a Rockwell Catalog on the counter behind the "smarts" (parts) KID at the counter> I told him "Just for grins lets look in that catolog. Lo and behold still in production and had them out of Houston in 3 Days.
As I recall They were about 4 bucks apice. Then brass nuts to avoid rusting tight again and I was In Bussiness

I can not help you, but thought maybe you could help me! I bought a surplus forklift and it says on the tag that it is a model ACP-40PS. Shipped to the USAF in 1976. Problem is I can not find any info on this machine. It had a valve stuck on #1 and #2 cylinder and I soaked it with oil it looks like #2 has compression now but not #1. But I can not find any info on engine breakdown, parts ect. Please help thanks James
