How Big D-17?

Thinking about putting together a D-17 for NATPA Div.4 pulling.Want to try to give those Oliver 77's a run. What is the very biggest you can go with the bore and stroke? How big of valve can I run? Any thoughts? Marty

In my experiance with the D series, they are light in the hind end. I figure that alot of them were designed to pull snap coupler implements, and with these they work well. ANything else and they just spin...lots of engine HP, no lead in the rear.

You can run a 4 3/4 bore and the stroke we are running is 6 1/4.

The problem with the D17 is the weight. Go with a WC and splitter box for better gears. A true Div 4 oliver 77 will always beat the ac in the 4000lb class. The WC will get into 3500 and 3750 with ease.

Don't you think a 17 would be suited just fine at 4000# and 4250# because of the extra rpm's they can run? RPM's build hp, right? WC div.4 is 2064, D-17 is 2394. The extra 330 rpm's should move a lot more cfm's of air/fuel. Olivers can only run 2100 in div.4. Marty

Check the NATPA winter pull results for the last two years. No AC pull in Div 4 4000 or 4250 because the olivers are just too tuff with the 6 cylinder engines. Div 3 is a whole different story the ac do great there. Now the rpm on D17 might help but cu inches are limited to about 410. The olivers can get close to 500. In div 4 3500 and 3750 the AC still have hard time keeping up with Bears ford and Lemmons 350.

Only 410? A guy up here has one with 469(4.75X6.625).He pulls road gear at 3000# and 3500#.He thinks one can go out to 7 inch stroke for a 496.What do you think? Marty

Sure would like to see this AC pull with the NATPA boys this winter. At 3000lbs he can't have a very big set of tires on rear. Most Natpa ac have 16.9 -38 tires and run about 8mph. I love the AC tractors but have never seen one that would pull good at the weights we talked about. I hope you build a huge one and have good luck. 10,000 dollars should build one.

Old Alice,That is a not a true statement.I have beaten up on a few olivers in my day,3000 all the way to 5500,no problem, after all a Oliver is just a John Deere with a sun tan.

We pull a WD with a D17 engine thats 400cid. Beats some of the Olivers most of the time,but we are only on 18.4 30 tires.Got try to get on 18.4 34's but the weight is a problem.Don't know if I can keep it in 3500 with the 34's.

Check out a LeRoi head,it has a combustion chamber so you can get a little longer rod in it

Marty, not sure how big you can go with the d-17,but i have faith that you will figure this one out.I am currently looking to put a small speed limit motor in my WC, i pull alot of cement,do you think a 5 inch stroke x 4.5 bore will take the abuse?And if you know of any one with internal parts for sale that would help me along.
