Timing early '40s WD-45 Magneto

I am having trouble timing my early 1940's WD-45. Found an earlier discussion on page 25 of discussions. I know that I have to have #1 cyl. in dead up position, however do not understand Richard's point that you must impulse the magneto. What is impulsing and how do you do it? Have temporarily misplaced manual.

WD 45's wern't made in the early 40's. They were made in the late 40's early 50's. Production 1948 to 1952 for a WD 45

Sorry but am unable to pass on apparent model identification issue. WD45 was first built in late 1953 and distributor ignition was standard. From 1933 until 1948 AC produced WC(which used magneto ignition) followed by WD and then WD45. The WC's have numerous visible mechanical diffences from a WD or WD45. Some of these differences are very significant if you are trying to find parts.

Ooops, someone must have changed the decals. The decals all say WD-45, however the Tractor No., I take as the serial number, is WC120886, which I assume makes it a WC instead of a WD. Magneto is Fairbanks Morse Type FM J4B3. Thanks for the effort.

Magneto turns clockwise as viewed looking at coupling. Normal technique for timing magneto is rotate engine in correct direction until timing mark lines up, then rotate mag until impulse trips (if necessary retard timing) and set there. Then turn engine over again and verify that it trips at correct point. I've seen plenty of WD's wearing WD45 decals but never a WC. It used to be common that when dealers took a tractor in trade, they repainted and put on new decals. Often they tried to make the tractor look newer than it was.

Impulsing is when you turn the mag intell it trips(snaps)
