COULD ANYONE TELL ME HOW TO CHECK AND MAKE SURE THE TURBO IS WORKING.YOU CAN NOT HERE IT WHEN YOU START OR SHUT OFF THE TRACTOR.IF IT IS NOT HOW MUCH TO HAVE ONE REBUILT.ALSO WILL IT HURT THE TRACTOR TO USE IT IF IT IS NOT WOKING.THE ONLY THING I USE IT FOR IS TO RAKE HAY AND FEED WITH.THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP.

I picked up a D17 IV diesel. It had a turbo on it. It would run without the turbo however I was advised the pump is adjusted to delivery more fuel when a turbo is present. My turbo was leaking oil pretty bad so I was tempted to run it without the turbo.

I did replace it and as advised you can see it spin if you remove the inlet pipe.

It probably has the old Thompson turbo TRW.Take the air inlet hose off the compresor side or inlet to the turbo and see if it is turning, speed the engine up the see if the compresor wheel spins up faster and drawing in air don't stick your fingers in their the blades are turning realy fast.Also another way is to put a manifold pressure guage in the intake manifold and see if it creates boost pressure under load.
