I am looking to buy a �40 B that has sat in a barn for the last 12 years without being started. I turned the engine about 5 degrees to see if it was seized. It was not. Do any of you recommend any special precautions or actions that I should take before trying to crank or fire the engine? I know that I will have to drain the old gas, clean the carburetor, and change the oil, filter, and antifreeze. My main concern is with the internal moving parts of the engine. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

If it was me I'd fill the cylinders with tranny fluid before I did an oil change and then after a day or to crank it with the plugs out to remove most of the tranny fluid. Then I'd change the oil. Filling the cylinders in that way will lube up the rings and valves etc and also help remove some of the rust that will be on the cylinder walls. Of course when you do start it up it will smoke like a train for a few minutes but that is alright.

this is a splash lube system, not pressureized so difficult to "pump up". it should be o.k. woth an oil change, but i would remove the plugs and squirt 2 spoonfuls of oil in each cylinder and crank over several revolutions by hand. if you are worried about the cran, how about putting 2 gallons of oil in the crankc ase, rolling the motor 10 revolutions by hand, let it set for an hour, then draining down to proper level. That should let the oil get into the main and rod journals. Prior to starting, take the brass TEE 1/8 inch pipe off the oil discharge tube at the right rear corner of the motor and pump it full with a few spoonfuls of oil with a squirt gun.
