I got my WD45 home. Two engines in pieces. I don't know much about shiming bearings and bearing crush. My engine serial no.s don't seem to match with the IT manual. It is a 1955 according to the serial number. When I put the rod bearings together, everything fits flush, no gaps. Some have shims in them, but there is a gap between the halves of the bearings. The one motor has a fresh rebuild, but the sleeves didn't seal(didn't clean the block) and the guy that had it took it apart and lost interest.

I read your post, copied it and put it in my IT manual to use as help. I'm still confused on some of it though. I saw the pictures about bearing crush, but I thought some 45's had shimless bearings. when I put the caps together, there is no gap at all between them, but the ones with shims still in them, leave a gap between the bearing halves?? Should I file the caps to get the right amount of crush?? I guess the question is, "shim, or not to shim"?? Thanks again for the help. Sleeves fit perfect now.

It is difficult to give you a right answer I would feel comfortable with as I don't know for sure what you have, same as you. I do know you need crush to hold the bearings in. Glad you have the IT manual, it does have a good illistration of bearing fit. Can you measure the inside diameter of a bearing without the creadshaft in it? Will they fit with some "adjustments"? Possibly a trip to your local automotive machine shop with your engines is in order. As these tractors are 50 years old now there is no telling what is in them and what has been done, even if your block is the right no. for the tractor, who knows what may have been done or what parts may have been installed. You do need crush, and you do need the correct clearence. Let us know what you find out and do. I would be hesitant about filing the caps to get a fit. It would be difficult to do it evenly and this is important. Here again, the machine shop will know how to aproach it.

Down a few posts, possibly the next page, is a longish post by me on shimming bearings. As for the liners, they should almost fall all the way into the block, the top of the liner should be a few thousands above the block so the head gasket will seal really well. The sealing surface on the block needs to be cleaned until they fit and you can rotate them by hand. If it is rusted badly, big pits, clean or lighty sandblast and use JB Weld to make it new looking. Use a lube when installing O rings. There is a lot of talk about what to use, but remember the O rings are exposed to oil from the crankcase, so they well not be damaged by such lubes. It sounds like you would benefit from a reprint of a factory repair manual, lots of good information in it that will help you get the best out of your 45. They are good tractors, but you need to know about them. Owners manual too. Questions? Here is the place, lot of guys really know, and have had experience with ACs.

The block I'm going to use: 45 61531 G
Extra block : 45 44256 G
Also, how far should the sleeves go in without the o-rings on them? Thanks for any help!
