I noticed that all these tractor share the same 226cid motor with different hp ratings.whats the difference in the motors? they all say I-head gas motors so is the head the same? the pistons, carb? Will the head off of a 170 fit on my wd45 and give it 52 hp"s. I here a d-17 motor will bolt right up to a 45 is this true?

I d17 will bolt into a 45, but I think it would be easier to rebuild your 45 with D17 pistons. The only thing that changed is the compression(pistons) and engine speed(gov.. I think they also switched to a wider main bearing, other than that the 226 engine never changed throughout the years.

About the 2nd year of the D-17 it was changed to a full flow oiling system. The block was changed to accomodate the new oil flow. Also the cam and oil pump gear was changed to make the oil pump turn faster.
