I have a new looking WICO model X, No. Y-54, Spec. XH-1343 magneto in a Fairbanks-Morse box labeled FM-ZV4B7, Wisconsin Motor Corp., VE4 and VF4. The magneto is for a 4 cylinder application. Clearly the box is incorrect but, perhaps, someone swapped a FM for a WICO on a Wisconsin engine years ago. Does anyone know if this magneto fits a Wisconsin V4 or, if not, what it does fit? Also would like to know what it is worth. Mag is complete with impulse coupling and works fine.

Hi Dean,

According to my Wisconsin parts manual for the VE4 and VF4 engines, both the Fairbanks-Morse FM-ZV4B7 (standard) and the WICO XH-1343B (optional) were used on those engines. The parts book lists the Wisconsin numbers as Y-106 for the F-M and Y-54 for the WICO. They would appear to be completely interchangeable.

Thanks, Rod. Seems reasonable as my uncle had this mag in the (wrong) FM box. He never had a Wisconsin V4 engine and probably picked the mag up at a sale. Interesting man: Never married and made his living on 70 acres unitl he died in 1986. Raised tobacco, cattle, both milk and beef, and hay. Big tractor: F-30. Second tractor: Farmall Regular bought new in 1927.

Dean,
We do a lot of mag work. Some of the "XH" series Wico mags will work in place of say a Fairbanks FMJ4B3 mag. Depending on the weight of the Wico unit, also will tell you if it's a real mag equipped with a magnetic rotor assy which produces the power, or one that has advance wieghts in it and needs to be powered up like a distributor. The lightwieght is the distributor style unit. HTH.
