CA hand cluch adjustment

The hand clutch on my ca is slipping and I need to adjust it if possible. The manual I have doesnt go into good detail about how to adjust it. But by looking at the parts diagram I see it has an adjusting hub. Could some one familiar with the hand clutch tell me how the adjustment works, and can I get to it through the opening on the bottom of the axle housing or will I need to separate the housing from the transmission.

Adjusting the clutch probably won't help unless somebody recently adjusted it to much. As the clutch lining wears, the clutch actually pulls away from the throwout bearing so what happens it that it won't diesngage when you pull the lever. You adjust the clutch through the top where the handle goes down in. There's a set screw to loosen and then you adjust the notched ring with a screwdriver to pull the throwout bearing closer to the clutch. But like I said, if the clutch all of a sudden started slipping I'd say it either needs a few parts inside or else the seal on the axle started to leak and let transmission oil get onto the clutch.

Thanks for the info Dan. I found the adjusting ring and tried it through the opening but it wouldnt budge. But I was able to see that the bearing was riding right up on the clutch housing. I looked through the hole on the bottom of the housing and could see that the clutch itself had plenty of material so I went ahead and pulled the housing. After lots of wd40 I got the adjusting ring free and moved it all the way in towards the tranny. I put it back together and its pulling a lot better now, at least it can climb up a slight grade now. I will try it on a steeper grade tommorow when its still light out and see how it does. I bought this tractor from a fellow who just had it out in his field and it aparently sat there for a couple of years. So I realy dont know how the adjuster got that way, but I hope that is all it was. Guess Ill find out tommorow. Thanks again.

I have adjusted the release bearing all the way in and I am still getting some slipping. Is this just because the tractor sat out for a while and needs to be run or possibly some other problem with the clutch itself. The clutch has plenty of material left in it and getting the release bearing off of it made a huge diference as it can now climb about a 30 deg incline versus about 10 deg before. Is there anything else I can check or do, or just replace the clutch.

I have done many of these It is very important to disasemble an clean the entire clutch unit The 3 steel balls must roll The more torque on the back wheels The more pessure the balls put on the clutch If your disc is dry and good This will work.Use clamps or a vice when removing screws that hold clutch pack togeter

Thanks Jim. The cluch is dry, but the tractor sat out in the open for a few years so it propably does need to be cleaned as you said. I"ll start on that and see where it takes me.
