WD Sputters and Pops

Also, where is the inspection hole for viewing the timing mark? The only thing I can find is the clutch inspection opening. I thought this might be a timing problem, but can't find the timing mark. Does anyone have any other ideas for me?

Sorry for getting long on this post, but I want to provide as much information as possible. This is my first year trying to cut my own Alfalfa field and certainly don't want to ask to use either my neighbor's or father-in-law's green tractors.

The fix, after checking a lot of other things, seems to have been to replace the condensor. The points and condensor had been replaced late last year, and the points still looked fine. I replaced it now pretty much since I couldn't think of what else to do. Now the tractor idles nice and runs well at high throttle.

I seem to have the same problems with my '49 WD. I sent it out to be rebuilt because of low compression, and now it has the same symptoms you describe. It starts like its too rich, idles ok, then sputters at higher RPM, except under load. When its really pulling it runs smooth, but when its loafing it sputters. I haven't had time to do much with it, but when I do, I plan to do pretty much what you already have done, rebuild the carb and tune up. I think my float valve is leaking because it leaks fuel from the carb when it sits, and that might explain the starting problems. I had a bad plug wire on my D-17 that caused a similar sputtering. I'm afraid I'm not much help for you, but I'll keep your email address and let you know what I find. Maybe you can do the same. I tried to find the timing mark on my D-17 the other day and had the same problem as you, so I timed it by ear at high rpm.
