Can you shed any light on the pros and cons of timing a gas engine by hooking the timing light up to the coil wire instead of the number one spark plug wire? I just read about it on the tractor talk board and would like to know your thoughts as it is something I have never heard of before.

The coil will fire the timing light every time spark is made at the points. I never did that but you would still have light on the timing marks at the correct time. You would also have a flash where there was not a timing mark. I will try it just to see if I get confused with the extra flashes. I just jumped over and read the posts. What they say is true but I fail to see the advantage of seeing the mark at top dead center and again at 180 degrees. That is unless you loose concentration while looking and waiting for the flywheel to make a complete revolution. That could be a problem for some I suppose with the engine running at only 6 or 8 hundred RPM"s.
We all have to have our clame to fame for figgerin out how to do old and tried and tru tasks a little different.
Ya see I clame that all my kids were conceved standin up in a hamock.
