Hello everyone I am having a problem with a 52 ca that I am restoring. My question is in regards to the generator. I purchased a new one a few months ago in prep for the restoration and am now installing the electrical system. the problem is that when i measure from ground (generator casing) to the a or f terminal it reads almost 2 ohms I found this while ohming out all my wiring before connecting the battery and it just doesnt seem right to me. Can anyone help and let me know if this is a problem or not or if these readings are correct. I am reading aprox a 3 ohm short accros the bat cables with the generator connected. Thanks

Bob, i dont know what the resistance is, but the A and F are connected together thru the armature and brushes. If it was rebuilt, take there word for it for now. If you ground the "F" to the case and start the tractor, there should be good voltage (maybe 14-15 volts on a 6 volt generator) between the "A" and "F" terminals. It will regulate one the battery is in the circuit. THe cutout keeps current from flowing backward thru the generator when mtor is off.

thanks for the info steve. I took the old generator apart and from what I can see from the way that it was built it would show grounded to the case across both terminals as you said with one of them insulated from the case. I then looked at the new one through the inspection plate and it was set up the same. I did find however that this one got a poor rebuild job. both wires were insulated with electrical tape and one was half broken from the terminal and the screw was not tightened on the other end. I was able to reuse the wire from the old gen to replace it though and it was in much better condition. I still got the same readings as before after this. I am using a regulator however and not the cutout as you mentioned. I have the regulator wired per the instructions that came with the wiring harness i bought for the tractor from agri-services. I went ahead and conected the batery briefly and the generator began to spin as a motor would. Is it possible that I got a bad regulator, or is it possibly wired wrong. Thanks again

All generator regulator should have a internal cut-out relay. If you are using a regulator you should move your third brush to the max charge position.

Thanks for the info Kent I will move the brush this evening when I get home. Is it possible that my regulator is wired wrong and that is why I am reading the short to ground from my gen on the battery cables or possibly a bad regulator I bought it new but I know u can get them bad out of the box. Thanks.

You will note that there are not any diodes like an alternator. You will measure very low resistance to ground through the F (field) and A (armature) terminal. When you wire a Gen/Regulator you connect F to F, A to A and the battery to the Bat trminals and polaris the gen/regulator.

Ok guys Ive got things worked out now. Turns out that my regulator is a 4 post not a 3. The 4th term is on the bottom and not labled so I didnt connect it and was substituting the L term for A. now that I have it connected right My short is gone and I should have the charging system polarized. I shorted the A term on the generator to the negative of the battery to do this. Does this sound right. I am retaining the original positive ground setup. And thanks again for all the help.

you polarize by shorting the "B" to the "A" terminal prior to startup.--- the "L" or 4th terminal is common on older units. it should be a hot terminal just like the "B", but is normally switched off with the key. Later units combined this into the "B" terminal. --- i dont think you use the L in place of the A. I think you should probably connect the B and L terminals together to the battery. like i said, normally the L terminal power is broken once the motor is off. Terminals should be labeled B,A,F, and L.----- ----on the generator acting like a motor, it will do this if the voltage regulator contact is stuck closed inside. this might happen if you put the A wire on the L terminal, i am not sure.

Thats what I did, connected the A to the L terminal. I just wish the stupid chinese regulator had come with a schematic. Then I would have known it was a 4 term and not a 3. I will go back and polarize the system as you said.
