AC 7060 Rookie Question

I bought my first AC today. This is my first big tractor and I'm struggling to make the transition from a 40HP to a 160+HP.
A 1977 7060. I ordered manuals, but I need a quick answer to my question.

I'm used to a clutch and manual gearbox on my little 40HP tractor.

What's the proper way to shift and downshift this tractor? It has a 12/2 transmission.

Does the clutch go in during each upshift and downshift? Or do you just move the shift lever one-click up and down to shift while not touching the clutch.

I know I'm not doing something right. It jerks between shifts and when I down shift the "Hyd Pressure @ 1800 RPM" light turns on.

What is the normal run RPM? Is it in betwen the green 2000-3000 RPM green bar?

I'd like to use it in the next few days to do some work, but don't want to mess up the transmission.

Any quick advice is much appreciated.

Thanks,
Jon

OK Jon, you have the Powershift trans. You can shift with no ill effects without using the clutch pedal which is really an inching pedal as the trans uses a limiting disc instead of a normal clutch. The trans will automatically downshift from 6th and 5th to 4th when you push in the pedal. You should keep engine speed above 1800 rpm when shifting to keep the trans oil pressure in the operating range. The light will blink on when under the 1800 rpm speed. Also if I remember correctly, when you push the clutch most of the way down, the tractor will stop but when you push it all the way down there is a trans brake that stops trans gears from turning. It is OK to start out at a low engine speed then throttle up once moving. And yes the trans will jump because of the ratio difference between the gears especially the 2 to 3 or the 3 to 2 shift.Take good care of it since it is a pretty decent machine. Hope this helps.

Thanks very much for the reply.

After taking time to read the manuals and do a training session with a local farmer, i got the hang of it.

I love the simplicity of the transmission compared to what i've used in the past and how powerful this tractor is.

Cheers!

Call your dealer for advice. It is obvious that you need more info on what you bought. Most dealers are more than willing to help. Just remember him when you need parts. Put yourself in the dealer's position- when you get a call for advice, knowing the caller went to NAPA, CarQuest, or others for filters and other parts- how would you respond? You bought something that needs to be operated properly- which is the best source to learn that- dealer, NAPA, etc.?
