I have an Allis Chalmers C, there is quite a bit of play in the front wheels. I have it apart and I see some shim washers inside. I tried removing them to raise the center gear but it seems to make the front end so tight it won't steer. What is the adjustment on this fine machine?

This sounds like the same problem my 1948 C has. Put it in third gear and move at more than a crawl, and you get a pretty alarming shimmy in the front wheels. The drag link and the steering gear appear pretty steady, so I'm guessing the problem may be a worn pinion and/or segment gear. You didn't say how many shims there are. Have you tried removing just one or two and leaving the rest in place? I haven't had mine apart yet, so I'll be interested to learn what you find out.
