I stared taking my B down winter project had the head redone. Now when I took the head off there were 3 rubber groments stuck in the 3 center water ports of the head.They are3/4 od and 1/4id and3/16 thick.Are they factory or added later and should they be replaced with new ones also whitch side of the head gasket goes up.Thanks Bottomd.

There were no rubber gromets in the water ports in the heads from the factory. I would guess that something has been altered to install them. I could not say without looking at the head with and without them. The head gasket will only go one way. If you have the water pump bolted on and the gasket is tight to it and all the water ports are lined up it is correct. If the water pump is not installed the gasket can not lay beyond the front of the block. If you flip it end for end they will cover part of the water ports.
