Anyone know what type of pipe I should use on my 41 Allis C steering column. It is rusted almost in to where it is braced from the trans. What type of bearings are inside this column. Have acces to many types of lathes etc. Justtrying to same some cash. Have some 120 wall chrome molly that might work. Hope someone else has done this same chore.

they are easy to make, use ehaust tubing swedged on the steering gear end to fit.... .120 chromemoly would work but check the o.d. of the steering gear, you might not have any tubing left after you bore it to fit, if you use 1 1/2" o.d. tubing....I have a 41 C that uses a top bearing, but its the only one i've seen, most have a bushing

i think the tube is 1.5 inch conduit. i made a bushing out of bronze on the lathe that had plenty of clearance so it dont bind on the shaft. slide it in the tube about 2 inches, then center punch the tube on each side in two places so the bushing wont move. works good.

I live in paris tx. Heard that the bearings were scarce to get. I will just mic the id of the cover and the od of the shaft and turn some type of plastic or composit.

There are no bearings inside, just two rubeer seals. The ones I used to replace my I got from Sandy Lakes, but they were not made for this use, they came off something else. Sandy Lake said the ones for AC are not longer made and they found these as replacement, wish I could remember where they came off. But the answer is no bearing just a bushing type seal.

Where in TX are you?

For our G we got a piece of pipe from a muffler shop. The only problem on the G was where it went onto the gearbox, it needed to be a little larger so the muffler guy swedged it and it fit fine. Not sure of the size on the C but I believe the muffler type pipe runs a different size again. Maybe it is because the inside is the same but being as thin as it is the outside is smaller. Anyway..I know of 3 G's that have a muffler pipe steering shaft cover. The "bearings" in the the G was a wood dowell with the outside metal clad. We replaced it with an oak dowell cut to size. Hope this helps. Den
