Hi,

OK. This old JD person is about to buy his first AC tractor. That"s a hard thing to say for someone that grew up with the family business being a JD dealership, you know! ;)

So, anyway, we"re thinking of buying an AC model G for use in the garden. My wife thinks one would be great with a set of cultivators. BTW, this will be her first tractor of her very own. ;)

I"ve been aware of these things my whole life, but never knew anyone that owned one. They look simple enough to me. I agree with her that one of these would look cool in the shed, and also appears to be darned useful in the garden.

However, no one can really know a machine until one lives with one. So, all you AC "G" folks out there, what do you think when it comes to using one?

Thanks in advance!

Stan (aka Steamer)

Mechanically they are a rear engine "B", with a continental engine. I am sure you know to get manuals. They have a good reputation.

Unblievable in what they will push on the tool bar. Much easier to see the plants while cultivating. In 2003 I used mine to cultivate 4 acres of pumpkins several times after using my B the first time over. As an old man I would get cramps in my hips and neck twisting to see under the B tractor. After I first mounted the cultivators on the G, I went out in the field after dark with a flashlight for what I thought would be a few feet to check settings. I worked with a flashlight for over a half hour and never took out one plant. You will not be sorry!

Hi,

Thanks for the great info! It"s the constant twisting to look around the tractor that we"d like to avoid. I could mount a set of cultivators on my JD "M", but then she"d have the same issue as you did on your AC "B".

I have plenty of other tractors to to the heavier work, but it"s the cultivators we"re really after with an AC "G". Using a rototiller gets old fast. Using the culivators on the JD "M" is better, but it is apparant that AC came up with the best way to do that job with the "G". ;)

I have experience with larger AC machines, since out old dealership serviced anything that came in the door. With the primary farming being dairy in our area no one had a "G", so I"m entering territory new to me. What better place to get a little real-world insight than right here? ;)

Stan

For garden cultivating, I would think about the spring tooth cultivators. They tend not to plow chunks over the stems of plants as bad when the shields have been removed. That statment sheds light on what type of soil we have, which is not sandy. If you are not fighting clay, the correct moisture, along with weed grouth to get the best job, you will not understand the clod problem. {:^D
