I have a 1948 WD which is in very good condition. I just got the old girl out for some exercise this weekend and had to pull start it. When we got her running, she developed a distinct knock whenever I let the clutch out. It stops when I push in the clutch. All of the hydraulics work, but the tractor has a distinct and loud knock. Any suggestions?

The knock goes away when clutch is depressed. Sounds like the rear rod or main bearing is bad -my guess is rod bearing has turned. But hopefully I am wrong! I'd pull the pan and check it before pulling the hyd pump.

Bob, If it were a engine bearing, you could hardly test it for pulling as the knock would worsen considerably under load and should be there at some level at all times. If it only makes a sound with the foot clutch engaged, I'd be looking else where especially since you suggest it is coming from the hydraulic area. Sounds like a hydraulic pump piston. If you put a screwdriver point on various places around where the noise is and put the screwdriver handle in your ear you will be able to here where it is comming from better. If it still seems to be in the hydraulic pump area it probably is a stuck piston/roller as others have said. Worth a look as it is not to hard to take off the pump. Worst part is getting the area CLEAN before doing any work that could let dirt into the hydarulic system. the pump can and will come off without removing the frame rail, just takes some care to do it. You might want to make a new gasket, just thin gasket paper, nothing special as both surfaces are machined and there is no real pressure there. I would start here from what you have already said before I tore into the engine.

Suggestions - nothing that going to sound very good.

Couple of questions. Is the knock in the engine, clutch, or transmission? 1. Does the tractor knock when the transmission is in neutral? 2. Does the tractor knock when you engage the hand clutch and depress the foot clutch or release the foot clutch and release the hand clutch? 3. Can you shift the transmission into all gears? 4. PTO out of gear?

My initial thought is that the main thrust bearing let go.

The knock is only when the clutch is let out. There seems to be no difference when we depress the hand clutch. The hydraulics work good, but the knock seems to be in the area of the hydraulic pump. I can change all gears easily, and the tractor still knocks when the tractor is in neutral and the cluth is let out. If it makes any difference, the tractor did not start making this noise until I drug it through a muddy field for a few hundred yards trying to pull start it.

A little more info is a must. Where is the knock? Surely it can be located more precisely. It could even be as simple as one of the hydraulic pump pistons not moving freely and looses contact with the cam and produces a knock.

I had a knock in my D-17 caused by one of the hydraulic pistons not staying in contact with the cam. It eventually went away with no maintenance. With multiple pistons, one failure only slows down the hydraulics but won't kill it. If it is a main, th knock should present itself on the oilpan and engine and really won't have as much to do with clutch position as it does with how hard the tractor is working. Heavy work - heavy knock. Unrelated to work level - probably the hydraulic issue just discussed.

The knock is in the area of the hydraulic pump, underneath the tractor. It knocks whenever the clutch is let out. I have all gears which change easily, and the tractor pulls strong. The hydraulics work good, it just knocks. It also knocks when the tractor is in neutral. Nothing seems to get rid of the knock except pushing the clutch in. Any help is appreciated.

Had almost the same trouble with one I bought . Have yet to get it going , but the mains where loose. They didn't spin but the were loose enough to shake the crank. It was bolted down and move and enough that I thought it should have made allot more noice. SO I would say to you take off the oil pan and see whats up. On my there was no medal at all . After I did let the oil sit about a week there was just a little brass colored Very small ( no way to measure them too small) pieces (like a speck).

Had the exact same problem in new/old WD (1954)
when I changed trans oil. A washer from some previous service was disloged and got between the gears that drive the hand cluch. Pull the cover off and roll the clutch assy by hand and see if has a hard spot. Had to use a punch to get metal out from between two teeth. Then radiator went...ha....pat
