D-17 Dies

My D-17 recently started to die after starting. It is acting like it is not getting fuel. I have opened everything up and no fuel problem unless inside the carb itself. I noticed that the linkage shaft that connects to the governor is quite loose. Is it possible that would be enough of an air leak to cause the tractor to stop? It stops at any speed.

My D17 does the same thing. What mine does is that the points need to be scraped. They are a little off line and burn and corrode easily. I pop the cap and scrape the points with a key just to get going again. It dies just like it ran out of gas. I bought an electronic conversion, but haven't gotten off my a** to put it in yet. Hope this helps.

Any you guys that have posted on this let me know if you came to a conclusion. My D-17 just started the same thing. I have cleaned out the sediment bowl (worked for a time started up again) Cleaned it again, no good. Good gas flow all the way to carb. Took carb apart, cleaned it-everything seems to be working smoothly. Changed the plugs, I need to plow snow! Help! Please? It was runningt buetifully and this started suddently, did check gas cap for venting too.

If the thing starts and then immediately dies,I have heard of a resistor causing this kind of problem. If it is electrical, you'll need all the luck you can get!

I dunno if either is at the root of your problems but it has been my experience that an in-line gas filter and a fresh battery ground cable can wind up fixing a whole bunch of stuff. Could there be some rust that is knocking itself loose in your gas tank? That has rained on my parade a couple times.

The first thing that I would check is to make sure the gas cap is vented. Then I would loosen the gas line from the carb and make sure the gas has a steady flow. If that is ok I would clean the carb and re-adjust.
Once I tried these if the tractor still kept stalling I would look at the ignition side for a bad coil, grounding out problem,loose wire, bad switch etc...Good Luck! let us know what you find.

I had that problem on my D17. Pulled my hair out
until I took the shut off valve and glass bowl off
(the one under the gas tank). Had a grain of wheat in the verticle tube, and when it hit right, it shut off the gas. When you let it sit a short while, it would start up again, and then die.
