I have a 1947 B. I just rebuilt the motor..new rings, laped valves, rod bearings. I bought it stuck. Its all back together. I cant get it started. It has to be a timing issue...I Think? I have cleaned and gapped the points to .020. Can see a nice spark at points when I crank. When I get the beveled gear pointing directly up and meshed with the "0" on the fiber gear and the rotor on the mag cover is pointing directly to the timing mark..... As I understand it, the "fire" mark on the flywheel should be cenetered in the hole on the left side of torque tube when all these other things line up. But its a good amount past it. When its set up like this, I get a great spark, but no matter how much gas, carb cleaner ect. I shoot up into manifold, not so much as a pop. Engine is sucking lots of air so I think I can rule out fuel problem, although plugs are never wet. If I have the fire mark centered in the hole in torque tube, with #1 cyl on comp. stroke and the rotor pointing to the timing mark inside mag cap I get a weeker spark, but still not even a pop. I have tried rotating it 180deg. and still no luck. put a little gas in the cylinders...still no ignition. What can I posibly be missing? I assume mag is OK as I get great spark when its set to what I think is right? Plugs are autolite and new. I have two things I think are possible. One is that I thought I had a bad condenser because no spark when hooked up, butb spark when disconected. I replaced it but same problem. I wrapped some elec tape around it to isolate it and all seems fine, but perhaps this is a lead for yall. Also is it possible someone installed the whole mag 180deg off wher it bolts to the block? Sorry for the long long rant, but Im new to magnetos and completely unable to figure this out.

I checked dueys web site and followed it.

First wet the plugs with ether , next don't crank be hand , maybe out of time. YOU"LL IN UP GETTING A FLIP. MAYBE A TRIP TO THE ER OR WORSE. Pull or use starter, if using starter only for short time and rest and try again, like 10 seconds wait 30 second etc. see if starter is getting warm, if so stop for a longer period. About mags I'm not the one to talk about them they give me a headache. Sounds like your doing you best to get that end of it anyway.

(meshed with the "0" on the fiber gear) ..... .....should be the "C" aligned with the beveled gear.

Thanks Duey, thats what I should have said in reply to Duey (IA), 10-19-2004 21:02:54
Sorry, in my tizzy I wanst clear. Yes, "c" is meshed with the beveled gear. I think I just had some brain fry problems. I have posted a more detailed question about this above. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Joe

There's two things you need to make an engine run. Spark n' fuel. You did mention you have spark, or at least the mag is making spark. What I'm wondering is, because you mentioned the spark plugs aren't even wet with all the cranking you did, even if you were off a tic on the timing, it still should at least backfire through the carb or exhaust. It sounds to me that there isn't any fuel entering the cylinders. Valves to tight maybe? If you still suspect it's the mag, we do mag repair and rebuilding if you think the mag could really be the culprit. Sounds to me like it could be fuel related along with timing.
Good Luck! You'll get it figured out..

thanks Steve in reply to Steve in N.J., 10-18-2004 19:19:07
Im getting closer I think. After much studying....It looks to me like the spark is great (white/blue) only when slow cranking, but with the 12v battery running the starter fast, spark looks like it gets really weak. I have wraped the coil and leads with e-tape but still same. I am getting an ocasional "pop" but no more. Perhaps the condenser problem mentioned above is a symptom of the real problem? Engine has lots of suction and exhaust pressure and there is some wet getting on the plugs upon closer inspection. I think Im getting there, and its driving me crazy. If I can get some further advice that would be great. If I still cant get her to fire, then I guess ill send it out to B&B. Thanks
