My oil filter sparks! Need help

Well, sort of. I have a 1945 b that I just rebuilt the motor on. wasnt getting any visible spark but sent a heck of a shock through me with my hand on a plug wire...Anyhow, I cant get it to start and im pretty sure its a ign. problem. I cleaned the points and long behold I have spark at the points with the cover off. This is where it gets weird....With the cover, roter, and wires installed It get no spark when a plug is grounded to block. Still shocks the heck out of my hand though. But when I have the cover off and a jumper cliped onto the copper/brass flat springy thing on the upper part of the magneto that sends spark to the cap and rotor and toutch it to block I get mabey 1 weak static spark, then nothing. This same simple jumper sparks like a champ when its toutched to the oil filter which is painted and has no oil in it yet(not grounded I think). It seems like mabey there is some sort of open ground? I have the kill wire removed from the mag. This is so strange to me. Why would I get spark on the oil filter, but not on the block. Please help if you can.

What I think happens with the spark plugs that dont like mags is that the modern plugs have a design feature so they dont cause radio noise and the thing that stops radio noise kills the spark. Even though they are suposed to interchange they wont if you want spark. All modern engines have extreme high voltage ignitions, old point stuff just cant pop the new plugs.

We service and rebuild Fairbanks magnetos. The first thing I would do is inspect the cap for a crack. Depending on whether you have a "J" series or "K" series Fairbanks mag, both mags utilized a tar/taped coil as original equipment. Many times when I service our customer's mags, if the coil hasn't been updated to the newer epoxy sealed coils, chances are the coil is grounding out to the mag housing. Check to see if you have that style coil. They usually get real "mushy" and soft. Also, a bad set of points, bad condensor, or even a old set of plugs could cause the same troubles. If you need any F/M or Wico parts, we carry them in stock along with our own spark plug wire sets. Your model B would use Autolite 295's which is an ideal plug, and they work great! We carry those in stock also if you can't find them locally. HTH.

It now strikes fine on engine block. Jumper wire held 1/4 in or less gets good spark aginst block when jumped off the copper plate that the brass rod in cap contacts. I know for sure Ill need a new cap and rotor. It still wont send a spark through a spark plug when hooked up to the jumper. Any Ideas why this might be? Mabey wrong kind of plugs? In new to magnetos.

Just happened to spot your post. I'm usually a JD guy, and I've had a #@%$ of a time with plugs in my '50 JD A with a Wico Mag. Been through Champion, AC, NGK and finally went to Autolite plugs. They seem to be doing O.K. Like Chad says, there must be something the others don't like about magnetos.

I have heard that the Chimpanze (champions) Plugs are Junk. I had them in my Allis B and changed over to AC delco (45's I think....) And my motor ran alot better. Just a thought, I dont think the Chimpanzes work good with Magnetos.
