I have a 1939 Allis B without a starter or light option, and I would like to put a Magneto on-off (grounding) switch up near the steering post so i don't have to get off the tractor to shut it off...Question is: is there a stock factory location to put the switch, or did this model rely on the grounding "tang" on the mag...i've looked through all my books, but all it shows is the starter/charging/lighting models with the box on the steering post...thanks guys

Ed,
We offer a Mag shut-off switch kit which is actually designed to replace the OEM equipped unit that came on a B,C, w/Ammeter box. Wiring is included. You probably can design a bracket to install the switch and you can attach it to the steering column support post or wherever is convienient for you. Not sure if there's room to mount the OEM Ammeter box on a 39', but we have good used Ammeter boxes too if one will work. Just a thought...

Thanks to all....I know what to do, as far as hooking it up and mounting a switch and all...but I just wondered if there was such a switch on the B's with no starter from the factory, I would like to make it as stock as possible if there ever was such-a-thing.....its hard for me to believe that the original crank start tractors relied on that little brass strip on the mag to stop the engine, but maybe so, they did sell fairly cheap at that time

Ed you have to remember that back then we carried feed and water to our livestock in pails more than not. Opened up corn fields by husking the the end rows and sides as well as 4 rows several times accross the field. Bagged our wheat in the field from the combine and carried the bags from the wagon and dumped the bags in a grainery bin located on the farm. Many farmers was still milking six or seven cows by hand.
Getting off the tractor to shut it off would not have seemed much of a chore.

I have some ground switches that were used on the Allis powered loaders and road graders but don't know if they used this on tractors too. It mounts on the FM J & X mags with wire rod slipping into it running to control panel.

But I have never seen one that looked factory installed. I have seen where a factory switch box was added with light switch and amp meter without a generator and starter.
