Hi everyone, I must say I am totally impressed with this forum here, I look forward to participating, what a great search capability... Anyway, I guess I've Joined the Allis Chalmers HD4 gang, just bought a HD4 w/backhoe with 500 original hours on it, looks like a fine machine, paid a little more ($9K US) to get something that works off the float... can I get some ratings on how good a buy it is 1 to 10 , 10 being unbeilievable? Also why so few HD4 posts compared to HD5 etc? were there that many fewer HD4's made?

Best regards
Mike

Yep it' 500 hours stored inside, lots of orig paint still shiny, still paint inside undercarraige and bucket, starts on 1/2 crank and the back hoe hydraulics are almost too snappy, backhoe is qick disconnect.

You mentioned if it has a shuttle shift, (it does) it's marked with (torque converter) what is the significance of these features?

Also the owner told me to use 80/90 gear oil on the undercarraige rollers.... this sounded strange to me is it possibly correct?

I get delivery tomorrow, I'll post some pics... she's a beauty

The "torque converter" is foreign to me, but I'm by no means an expert. Is it a power shift, or does it only control forward and reverse? I don't know of any HD4 of 3 that had power shift, but they may have made some. Gear lube (80 or 90 wt.) in the rollers is what AC called for. I have been told by several on this site to use what John Deere calls "corn head grease". It won't leak out when setting like gear oil will. It sort of "gels up" when not turning, but goes back to a liquid state when in motion. Sounds like a good buy to me. In that kind of shape, it should last you a lifetime. Good luck with it, and keep us posted.

HD5 is pretty old when compared to the HD4. HD5 production ended around 1954. HD6 took the place of the HD5 and is closer in age to the HD4. During some years, HD3s (or H3s), HD4s, and HD6s were being manufactured at the same time. I've got an HD6 and an HD4. HD6 kept getting made into the mid-70s I believe under the Fiat or Fiat/Allis name. The HD4 got changed to a number-series name, i.e. 652, 653, etc. I think the HD4 began around 1965 or 66 and was made until 1969. At that point the name was changed to the 650 series and production went on until around 1975. In answer to your question about the bigger HDs getting more mention than the little ones - at least in my area there used to be HD5s, 6s, and 7s all over the place - but the little Allis crawlers were and are scarce.

Mike,
If those 500 hrs. are indeed original, then I think you got a good deal. Was it stored inside? Did it just sit, or did the owner start it and move it around? If everything works well, and it all looks good, I would give the deal a 6 or 7 (a ten would mean someone paid me to take it!LOL). As far as the number of posts, I don't think there were as many of those smaller crawlers made. I know the HD3 (which I have one of) was only made for about 7 years. I am unsure of the year span for the HD4, but there are many similar or interchanging parts between the two. A little more HP with the 4 - always a good thing. Compared to other makes, they have a much heavier undercarriage, and the final drives are stronger, I think. They are also a little more mechanic-friendly, in my opinion. Unlike some of the older JD, you don't have to drop the tracks and pull the final to get to the clutch and brake band. And, if it has the forward/reverse shuttle clutch, even better. Those things rarely give any trouble, and I don't think you'll live long enough to wear it out. Sounds like you got a good deal. I always HEAR about these deals - from the new owner - just never find them in time. Good luck, and tell us all about it after you use it some. The guys over at the Crawler/Dozer forum would probably like to hear about it, too. Have fun!
