D-17 Spin out wheels keep slipping

My D17 spin out wheels keep rotating out and in. I lock them down with the lock nuts but somehow they work loose and spin back and forth depending on if Im pulling or pushing backward. Any suggestions?

Each eccentric has a shim between it and the rail which it slides on. If you just aquired the tractor, it is possible they might have been taken apart and one or two of these shims might have been lost or left out. Also if the wheel has been moving a lot they may be worn to the point where they won't tighten anymore.

I think you are supposed to use a stop on each side of the eccentric housing. That's the way I operate my WD45 and have never had a problem.

Agreed. I drove a WD for several years and the wheels never spun. If you look at one of the rails on each side, you will notice holes drilled about every 12 inches apart. You are supposed to put the locks in these holes. If your tractor has no locks, get a set from your AGCO dealer. This will stop the spinning, pure and simple.

Dave and Doug- the stops do not stop the slip- they are for setting the wheel spacing. The eccentrics hold the wheel to the rim. With time, and many hours of use, they wear down, along with the rails- then they slip.

Victor; Are you tightening the eccentrics all the way? All of them must rotate all the way to the stops for them to hold properly. It's possible the eccentrics have become so worn they won't hold if you've allowed them to slip too much, or perhaps the rails on the rims have worn--or both. If you're tightening all the eccentrics all the way and they still slip it sounds like you have some serious wear there. Good luck.

You are absolutely right- there is wear on either the rails or the eccentrics. The locks merely establish the rim stops, there is space ahead and behind, so the wheel is held tight to the rail with the eccentrics. Look for slightly scalloped areas on the rail- if you find them, perhaps another position is not worn and can be useable. The eccentrics may also have a flat spot. If you start tightening at the bottom of the rim and finish at the top, and the wheel still slides on the rail, the wear is either at the rail or the eccentric. This is not a problem that fixes itself. If the rail is worn, and another position is not useable, you need to dismount the tire and weld up the rail and grind smooth, to original size.

My tractors have clamps that lock on the rail that stops that.

You're right about the clamps, Sid, but they're for setting tread width, not to hold the rims in position. If Victor's eccentrics aren't holding the rail clamps are just a patch to cover up the problem. The rim will still slip when direction is changed.

The stops are for tread width setting and also for holding rim in postion. AC always told owners to use stop as shown in operator manual. The eccentrics might be worn, but probaly have some dirt in them not allowing them to full lock. When working at AC dealer we always had customer check these areas if they had the problem described.
