Model B timing

Help! I have a model B (B-7463) the Wico X distributer doesn"t fire so I got a FMJ 4B3 mag to replace it with. According to the IT book there shouldf be a timing mark visible on the flywheel through an oblong hole. All I see is the pressure plate. Am I looking in the wrong Place? If not what am I missing? Thought I was fairly smart till I started this little project.

Hi Bert,

It's not an oblong hole. It is a round hole, about 1" in diameter and is located on the left (looking forward) side of the torque tube vertically between the two tapped implement mounting holes. This is right where the torque tube bolts to the engine block. There should be two timing marks on the OD of the flywheel when viewed through this hole. One is "center" for TDC of #1 piston and the other is "fire" which is the advance spark position for #1 cylinder. Rotating the crank very slowly in the normal direction, you will come up on the "fire" mark before you get to the "center" mark. When timing, make sure you are on the compression stroke and not the exhaust stroke.

Thanks Rod. I looked and based on your description, and the fact there is a belly mounted mower on the tractor, could the bracets be covering the hole? If that"s possible, I"ll drop the mount in the morning and thank you again in the afternoon.

Yes, that left side mounting bracket for the belly sickle mower will completely cover the hole. Temporarily remove it and that will do the trick.

Rod, thanks so much got her tuned and runs great. Now I can concentrat on cleaning her up and fix the little things wrong with her.
