Chad,

Fine lookin' machine ya have there! The first thing I would do is loose the Chimpanze spark plugs. The popping could be caused by a fouled plug or two, and Champs are noted for that. Put a real set of plugs in it like Autolite 295's. Quite a few AC owners use Autolites with great success. We have em' in stock if ya need em. Just drop us a line. You might be surprised to see a lot of those little problems go away with a new set of plugs....Enjoy your B!

Thanks All, Before steve droped a line I went out and bought a new set of plugs, I bought the R45 AC delcos though. Is this a good set or should I look into getting the Autolites. I put the AC in last night and WOW what a difference getting the Champions (SHITPIONS) out. It fired on the first 1/4 turn and started on the second. it also ran Alot better and noticed no backfiring threw the exhuast.
I have one more Question to you all, I tried the fuel shut off trick and it seems to work good for me except when the engine is still warm it does seem to start harder than if it is cooled down. does this seem to happen with these tractor more than not. Thanks Chad

If the mag looks ok and you clean out the carb, one other suggestion... I found that mine doesn't like to start if I kill it with the ground strip on the side of the mag and then let it sit. It starts much easier if I shut off the fuel valve (under the tank) and let it run out of gas. It was explained to me that if you kill the spark, the fuel sitting in the float bowl heats up, explands and sort of floods it.

What plugs would be recommended for this tractor? it has champions in it, Ive read somewhere in the forums to not use champions. what # plug for like a AC delco or a autolite plug would be used. Thanks Chad

Thanks so far Guys. I think I have desided to leave the crank start, for my starting method. I went out tonight and gave it one crank and it coughed and then tried it one more time and it started. but I did notice while it was running that it was acasionally poping threw the exhuast, does anyone know what this problem could be, or where a good start would be. the motor was just recently gone threw with new crank bearing and the crank turned. it also had a sleeve kit put in it. the carb looks to be a little old and dirty (ZEINITH) but the magneto looks very clean. thanks for your help in advanced.. Chad

Well as other folks have pointed out, to do it right you are going to have to get a new torque tube....

When I completely rebuilding my '39 B I was debating adding a starter. I got the mag and carb rebuilt. I can get it started on the second pop with out fail now.... It looks really nice (like a parade queen) but I use it to mow several arces and it's as orginal as I can get it.... Steve at B&B did my carb and a local magneto rebuilder did the mag for me...

those things are made for a very small lawn mower motor. think of the size of the flywheel and starter motor gear. maybe 12 inch and 2 inch diameter?? or 6 to 1 ratio.----- thats about what you would need on the front end to make this thing work. now it you put it in the back of th seat and belt drive to the pto shaft with a 2 or 3 to 1 reduction ----- well that might work. remember, the pto runs about 1/3 motor speed. if wanted a starter, which i would want, i would get another torque tube, flywheel and starter.

I believe the only sensible way to do it is to get a torque tube with the starter opening, a new flywheel and a starter. To do it any other way is an enormous project. The best deal is to get someone to help you get it to start better. Allis's usually start pretty good if everything is right (parts, timing, cylinders, carb, etc.).
