I installed an alternator(with internal regulator) on my wc, but not working. How exactly is it supposed to be wired? (ground and battery etc.) And what style alternator is best, maybe they gave me the wrong one?

Gary,
It only takes a little longer to install a two wire Alternator which doesn't need 1200 rpm's or better to "excite" the regulator to charge. It starts charging immediately when the engine lights off. The earlier 10SI that Steve mentioned (75-early 80's) is a great pick, and is a very reliable unit. We don't recommend a 1 wire for tractors that start n' stop frequently, or that are used in parades. It doesn't give the battery enough time to build reserve, and eventually the battery get's low to where a battery charger is summoned in order to bring it back up to snuff. If it's a working tractor where it runs for quite some time working in the fields or mowing, then the 1 wire will fill the bill. There are folks out there using 1 wires with success because of that reason.... Good Luck and have fun!

if it is a Mitsubishi or newer delco (1985 on) then you connect the big lug to the ampmeter (oposite sode of amp goes to + battery). and you connect a 12 volt reference line to one of the small spade terminals, marked "L". this wire has 12 volts with the key or ignition switch on, and no voltage when motor is off.----- if you have the odler DELCO 1975-85, it should have two spade terminals on the side in line like this "--" and not parallel like this "11". next ther terminals are marked 1 and 2. 2 is hot or 12 volts, connect it straight to the 12 voltlug on the back of alternator. the other terminal 1, is similar to the "L" wire and has 12 volt switched. Lastly it is a benifit to install a large 10 ohm resistor in the "1" line on the old delco, and a 100ohm resistor in the "L" line of the new DELCO to drop voltage slightly and assist in the charging. This is the reference line that telss the regulator to kick in. You can buy the resistor at Radio Shack. about 1/4 inch square and 2 inches long. If you need a diagral, ask. [email protected]

I wlways try to put a delco one wire on makes it so simple a 4 year old can put one on. Just one wire to the battery and its done. Only draw back is on some it takes reving it up to max to get it to start chargeing
