I have found a 52 A-C CA tractor in good running condition. It cranks up good and runs good with no smoke coming out of the engine.The worst leak on the tractor is from the hydraulic cylinders for the 3 pt. hitch. There is a small crack( about one inch long; has been welded up and there is some fluid seeping out) in the tramsmission housing up high where the tractor bolts together witn the front half. Also, the transmission leaver has to be held in reverse in order to back the tractor up. the seller wants $1500 for the tractor. I am new to old tractors and was wondering what advise those with more experience than me could give me concerning this tractor

$1500. is way too much for this tractor with the problems you know about. It could undoubtedly be fixed or used for parts for another CA. But if it were me I wouldn't want to have near that much invested in it. CA is a great little tractor, but you can find a better one.

I'm with Bob. That welded crack in the transmission housing would bother me greatly. There is a lot of stress on that part because it is a key connection between the engine and the Drive wheels. There a very few people who can weld cast and even then the strength of the weld is highly suspect. I would run from that deal also. I just bought a 53 CA WF for $1800 and the guy through in 2 old "B"s and a SC case. The CA runs like a top and only needs paint.

If it were me I would run from that deal. The hydraulic leak is nothing, but the other two problems would give me cause for great concern. Unless I'm completely fouled, I would think you should be able to get a good CA for that price.Not necessarily real pretty, but mechanically sound. HTH
