What is the difference between these two tractors?

Over the course of their 50+ year life span, there isn't much that might not have been changed on these tractors. Dan stated some of the differences between the two tractors when they were new, but as most parts are interchangable, it's not so simple now. For example, if a 45's shifter wore out it could have easily been replace with one from a straight WD. I would guess that most straight WD's that have had engine overhauls, have had some things from a 45 installed to up the horse power. The difference in engine displacement was the result of the WD45 having a 4.5" stroke while the WD had a 4.0" stroke on the crank. The WD45 had 43.2 belt HP which was 20% more than the WD. The engine block of a straight WD had 2 removable plates on the right side of the block while the block of a WD45 was solid and did not have these plates. As I said, it's very possible that after 50 years or more any of these tractors is a combonation of parts from both models. I'll bet there are lots of original WD's out there that now either have WD45 blocks or WD45 cranks as well as WD45 transmissions or at least WD45 shift levers. So unless you overhaul one of these old tractors yourself, it's really hard to tell exactly what you have under the surface.

i recently bought a tractor that was supposed to be a wd45. it appears to have been painted and new decals etc. the decal is a wd the shifter is crooked, th block has no freeze plugs or plates. the serial # is 208663. what do i have?

Biggest difference is 201 cid engine in WD and 226 in WD45. WD45 and last year of WD production all had constant mesh transmission (have curved shifter) while most WD"s have a sliding gear unit with the straight shifter. WD45"s had larger standard tires, and all except the very earliest WD45"s came from the factory with snap coupler but most WD"s have had it added on. From a distance you can"t really see the difference and to make matters worse, many times a WD has had the larger engiine installed. Sometime the only way to tell for sure is the serial number. 146606 and below is WD, while 146607 and up is WD45. However, if you see a straight shifting lever, then you can say for sure you have a WD.
