D17IV - Battery not being charged

The battery on our D17IV is not being charged by the generator. It will hold a charge for a few days from a battery charger, but with the battery ignition and starting the tractor the battery goes dead after a few days. The ammeter does not show a charge at all, but shows a discharge when you turn the lights on with the motor on or off. What is the procedure to test the generator to see if it is defective? Tom

--ground the "F" terminal on the generator to the frame and see if that works. that will bypass one of the coils of the voltage regulator.
--touch the "B" and "G" terminals of the regulator together and see if that kicks things in, that bypasses another coil of the regulator.
--if you do both of the above, ground the F, and connect the "G" (from the generator "A") to the battery "B" going to the amp meter, the amp should show a charge if the generator is good. (and the wires are all good). --to bypass everything, take both wiwres off the generator, ground the "F", start tractor and measure volts with a volt meter across the "A" and "F" terminals. should be maybe 20 volts non regulated. when connected to a battery it will go to 13.8- 14 volts.
