D12 Series III pto problem

The pto on my Series III D12 slips when under a heavy load such as bush hogging in tall grass. It also doesn"t stop turning when it is disengaged, but rather continues to turn although at a much slower speed than when engaged, like it is dragging or not completely disengaging. Before I take it apart, I would like to know what I might be getting myself into. Thank you for any info or help. Roxie

Roxie I think there is an adjustment on the plates. I would try that first. Here goes, Remove the PTO cover, remove the drawbar, remove the drawbar suport plate, (the steel plated that goes over the PTO and supports the drawbar). Next remove the gasket paper from houseing. Reach in thru the holes and turn the adjusting screw clockwise. You have to depress the little lock pin. Adjust till lever takes 50-65 pound to pull. Reinstall parts and try it. Make a new gasket with gasket paper from NAPA. Make sure you get the lock pin back into place! As far as it turning when not engaged try pulling the lever back really hard in the disengaded position if it stops turning the is a little stop on the platform that you can move back to hold the lever. If it keeps turning your plates are warped and junk. The bad news is you can not get new plates. You have to try to find used ones. If you run in to anything just e-mail me. By the way what state are you from? Does your D-12 have the front wieght? How about the front lift shaft? You don't know of any D-12 III for sale or a cultivator for one? Thanks Terry

TJ, I forgot to tell you I live up in Maine. It seems like the end of the earth up here sometimes. When I need something for one of my tractors, it seems it usually has to be shipped about a thousand miles. Take care. Roxie

Thanks TJ for the information. I'll try your suggestion as soon as I get the time. I hope the clutch discs aren't warped. My D12 does have the front weight and front wheel weights, but I don't know what you mean by the front lift shaft. I don't know of any D12 or cultivators for sale. Cultivators for a CA might fit?? The mounting area on the D12 looks about the same as on my CA I used to have. I have a set of frame weights from my old CA that I'm going to try on the D12. Best regards.
